A Day on the Farm

Doug’s aunt and uncle are dairy farmers in Black Creek, WI.  We decided to take the kids out there to show them what it was like.  Truth be told, I have never been on a “real” farm either.   Sure, I’ve gone to a farm to pick out my pumpkin for Halloween, but I don’t think that really counts.  This was going to be an experience for the entire family!

We started out the visit with a ride on the ranger.  All four of my boys piled into the front seat and took a drive around the farm and through the hay field.  Weston was peeved when it was over and wanted to go again and again!  Each time they took off, you could hear Jaden’s squeels and yelps of excitment.

Weston (my little animal lover) found the barn cat(s) almost right away.  One in particular became a “toy” for the triplets.  The cat was so tolerant of them too .. letting them pick her up and carry her around like a stuffed animal.  Both of the boys FREAKED out and get so excited!

We saw two of calves.  At first, the triplets weren’t too sure about them.  Jaden named them right away.  The one on the left was named Daisy and the other Josie.  Funny how Owen was still on the farm with us :)

After about an hour, the boys warmed up to the calves and jumped right in feeding them and letting them suck on their hands.  Weston would bend over to get a handful of corn out of the bucket and the calf would lick his hair.  When he stood up, his hair was also standing straight up … he got lots of cow kisses!

You MUST watch this video!  I laughed soooo hard!

As you can see, by the end of our visit, the boys were totally comfortable with the animals!

Of course a visit to the farm wouldn’t have complete without some tractors!  Jaden convinced Mike to take out the really huge tractor too … if you look really hard you can see my little Jaden in the cab.  He was trying to ‘run me over.’

This is my new favorite picture of the boys.  All of them hanging out together … I can almost imagine them a few feet taller standing in the same sort of way.  I still picture four heads looking out over the field. I don’t really know that will ever change.

Dang … just writing that last sentence made my chest tighten.  Funny how quick the grief can sneak up on you.  One of my kids died … like actually died.  I had another child.  It’s hard to remember at times … as I start to feel like this is ‘normal’.  It gets harder to image life any other way.  I can’t picture three cribs anymore.  It’s normal to have only two.  Does that make me a bad mom?  Am I forgetting Owen?  I don’t think so … I feel like I’m living the way I’m supposed to.  I’m letting myself get lost in the love of my boys on earth.

Well this post took an unexpected turn!  I saw down excited to share pictures from our farm adventure and I’m ending it on a serious note.  I guess that’s pretty true of how greif comes and goes.  A constant, surprising journey.

Weston = bird boy

With the weather getting warmer these days, I’ve learned something about Weston – he LOVES birds.  We are talking total freak out – will watch them out the back door for hours kind of love.  I grabbed my iPad to video tape a freak out session while trying to get the kids in the house after running Jaden to school.  Hence the pj’s in the video :)  Enjoy!

We survived our trip to the zoo!

Two weeks ago (when it was just about 80 degrees outside!) I took all three boys to the zoo … by myself!  I’m not sure if I was brave or out of my mind!!  I was too terrified to take the triplets out of the wagon, so they just stayed strapped in the whole day.  They were pretty good about it … lots of stuff to look at I guess.

Jaden was pretty good too.  He liked being the big brother and being able to make all the choices.  I pretty much let him lead us all around for the day.  We saw the fish, tigers, monkeys, lions, bats … you name it Jaden took us to see them.

The greatest part?  We SURVIVED!!  And I think could do it again.  It’s a little hard to sneak in a zoo visit while Jaden is in school (we either run into nap time or we wouldn’t get home in time to get Jaden off the bus).  BUT this summer, when I’ve got all three boys all day long (I’m tired just thinking about what it’s going to be like) the zoo is going to be a savior!  Can the zoo be voted best mom of the year?

Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumb

That face pretty much sums up Jaden …

All I asked for was one picture of them all … and they are all looking in a different direction!

Jaden walked around the entire zoo – I thought I’d be a nice mom and let him ride to the car – all three boys all together.   Makes this mom smile ear to ear :)

Proof that my kids are monsters!

I desperately need to take back control of my house.  I don’t mean this in a whining sort of way.  Or in a way that implies I’m looking for pity.  I fully acknowledge that it’s all my fault my babies are out of control!

In spite of the chaos of the house and the naughtiness …. I can’t help but laugh (sometimes hysterically) at the things these kids come up with!  AND I usually find the time to grab my camera when things get really nuts.  Making memories right??

Why not play in Mom’s cupboards?  They look pretty fun to me … if only I would fit in there!

Jaden couldn’t stay away for long :)

I mean come on!  How cute is that?  Two boys all snuggled in their “fort”  If only this wasn’t happening when I was trying to make dinner :)

and yes … Jaden isn’t wearing any pants.  What is it with boys that they come home from school and drop their drawers?  ALL of my kids take off their pants and run around nakie.  Is it a boy thing?  Or a Bissing boy thing?

Oh yes … making memories!  Come on moms … what crazy stories about your kids do you have to share?  I know I’m not alone in this nut house named motherhood!

11 Months Old

The triplets are going to be a year old already next month.  Every month I think “this is my favorite age” then they get a little bit older and I think the same thing all over again.  I did the same thing with Jaden.  Although, having a five-year old is so interesting!  I love to watch his personality emerge and how he mimics Doug and I.

The triplets still aren’t walking … but are getting pretty close.  They love table foods.  Weston is still attached to his nook.  Logan has a smile that can charm anyone’s pants off.  Weston can wave “buh bye” – only when he wants to of course.  Logan’s trick?  He shacks his head back and forth when you tell him “no no no”.

Less than a month and we’ll be celebrating their first birthday.  It’ll have a silver lining of course.  Owen “would have been” one.  I don’t want every holiday or life even to be about how Owen isn’t there.  We have three boys who ARE there.  I still want to celebrate the boys we still have on earth.  They are just important.  It doesn’t mean that I won’t be thinking about Owen … I would give anything to have him back.  But, we have a lot to still be thankful for and we are going to celebrate it!

9 Months

I’m really late … like they are almost 10 months old, but I finally took the boy’s 9 month old photos.  So much has changed with them that I feel like I could write forever!  I think the best way to tackle this is with a list.  Man I love lists ….

  • They are eating cereal three times a day
  • They eat about 8oz of a fruit or veggie at each meal … plus cereal!
  • Weston is a human garbage disposal and will eat anything at any temperature
  • Logan is a fussy eater and must have his food warmed
  • They like to steal each other’s cheerios
  • I gave the boys some corn kernels just yesterday and they love them!
  • The boys eat breakfast the best! I mean lots of grunting and whining if I don’t go fast enough

Not only are the boys eating a ton and trying all kinds of new foods, they are WAY more mobile!  Weston pulled himself up to his feet first.  We found him after his nap on his knees, hanging his arms over the edge, yelling and screaming.  Doug and I lowered the cribs immediately!  Logan still has a little trouble getting up to his feet but can do it if he really wants to.  He’s got a big old Buddha belly to pull up.  Just today, Weston pulled himself up on the couch, walked all the way to the other end of the couch and was really thinking about trying to reach for the basket close by.  He was bouncing his knees and reaching out his hand as if he really wanted to, but wasn’t quite sure he would make it.  My bet is that he wouldn’t have.  But they’ve got to learn, right?

They have started to know their names.  Not always, but most of the time, they’ll look when I sing their name.  They really respond to smiling and laughing.  I can coax Logan all the way back from the other side of the kitchen by calling his name and making baby faces at him.  Logan also likes to crawl into the kitchen when I’m cooking and grabs at my feet so I pick him up.  Weston does the same, but he usually just pulls himself up to standing while holding onto my pants.

They don’t like it when I leave the room.  Not always … but most of the time they are more aware of who is around.

Both of them LOVE their big brother.  Jaden can do just about anything and get them to laugh and giggle.  I’m talking full out screams, bloody murder, hysteria.  And Jaden comes along and the boys are all smiles.  Brotherhood is a tight bond.

I’m really enjoying the triplet’s age.  You can play with them … make them laugh and giggle.  They also can occupy themselves just a little (with the right rattle or toy of course).  Just like with Jaden, each age gets better and better.

This isn’t the greatest picture … but can you just take a second to check out the rolls on Logan’s legs and his HUGE belly.  He’s growing into such a porker!

Logan – Owl boy — he’s got Doug’s super blonde hair!

He doesn’t sit still for very long.  Me taking pictures wasn’t very interesting to him.

Just a few seconds later, Weston was crawling up my leg wanting to see what I had.

One is goofy smiling and the other looks really confused.  They really look like rugrats.

There are the gummy smiles!  (Logan has two teeth on the bottom and is working on another one on top & Weston has two coming through on the bottom.)

Once again, they don’t sit still for very long.

So we moved to the couch.  They sat a little better … but they sure are silly!  Note that Weston’s outfit isn’t snapped in the crotch – not because I was lazy or forgot … the kid won’t sit still long enough to get the snapped!  I gave up ….

The boys really love to stand on things.  You can see the pure excitement in their eyes in this photo!

And now the determination of getting the remote controls …

This just proves that they are goobers.

And here is a close up (and a little blurry) picture of Logan’s new face … tongue up over his top lip, smacking … and drooling of course.  Reminds me of the face Owen used to make in one of the last videos of him.  It’s not sad to me though, I find it comforting.  They have a little bit of Owen with them.

Two trouble makers ….

I’m an awful mom … things got so crazy, I never got pictures of Weston on his own.  Terrible.  Next time I’ll take a few extra :)

ps Jaden starts school in 13 days!  yikes!

Mother’s Day

This mom of four boys had a great mother’s day!

I woke up to the babies and hopped up to start feeding.  I got done feeding two babies and Jaden woke up.  He said he wanted to make me breakfast so I “suggested” he wake up dad.  wink wink  Doug got up, wished me a happy mother’s day and fed the third child.  Then he got to cooking while Jaden and I played Lego Star Wars (the video game Jaden earned all on his own by doing chores).

All of a sudden Doug was yelling that there was a stork in the backyard and we should come and see.  A stork?  We got up to see what it was all about and wouldn’t ya know … Doug got me a fire pit!  It was propped up against the gazebo.   Can’t wait to break it in!

Then we packed up the boys and headed over to my parent’s house.  Rae & Dad made us a wonderful meal!  Mom and I got to sit out on the deck (also called Mexico) and enjoy some of the sunshine.

Rachael helped change the boy’s diapers before a feeding and brought them back out with new outfits!  The triplets had “I love Mom” onesies and Jaden had on a “Mom’s Home Run Hitter” shirt.  SO ADORABLE!

And the best gift of the day was pictures with me and my boys.  I’m always behind the camera.  We actually pulled off a few really good ones!

and a not so good one — but this is what I feel like when all the boys are crying at the same time.  Makes my eyes cross and my face contort …

Mom has been talking about these chairs for a few weeks now.  I have to admit, I wasn’t on board.  Thought they were a little nuts.  But they actually work out really nice!  It still cracks me up to see all three of them in a line.  Wonder if that will ever change?

/

Owen doesn’t look that thrilled in the picture, but he fit in the chairs pretty well.  His feet touched the ground and he “filled” out the chair the best.  My chunk!  (I should be more careful with these chubby comments or he’s going to end up with a chunky monkey complex when he gets older.  I just can’t help it with all of his rolls!)

Weston found a way to “recline” in his chair!

Jaden is growing into such a little man.  My heart melts at him touching the side of my face in this one.  I love it when he wraps his arms around my neck from behind and kisses me on the cheek.  He’s a little charmer.  Ladies watch out!

Here is Owen on Uncle Jake’s lap, learning how to text.

I had a really nice day.  Hope all you mothers out there enjoyed your day as well!

Let the good times roll!

First Monday back from Spring Break … rough start to the week.  It started with Jaden whining and complaining that he didn’t want cereal for breakfast.

SOMEONE didn’t catch up on enough sleep on Sunday night.  I tried to get him in bed at a decent time … but the little guy was so itchy.

The morning was topped off with him throwing his cereal … yep took a handful of Trix out of his bowl and threw it on the kitchen floor.  This was immediately followed up with a timeout.  And all before 8am.

We managed to pull it together, eat our eat our Trix and get to the bus on time.  But not without a fit about wearing the right winter hat.  Phew …

On a much happier note, two of the triplets rolled over this weekend!  Of course they didn’t roll over the “normal” first way (front to back).  They roll from their backs to their tummies.  True Medal/Bissing fashion!  Doug and I were lucky enough to get it on video!

Logan Rolling Over

Weston Rolling Over

Owen is next.  Poor chub just can’t get moving.  While he might not be able to roll over … he certainly has enough rolls!  (haha get it?)

Triple Wonder

Like so many times before, I am captured by the awesomeness of having triplets.  As these boys grow bigger, their personalities are becoming more and more defined.

I think of how different my brother, sister and I are from each other.  Sure we have lots in common, but we are all very different.  So often we credit these differences to our birth order – or that our family was in a much different place when we were born.  For example, my parents lived in Chicago and were learning how to make their way in the world when I was born.  My brother on the other hand, was born when my dad had settled into his career and we had been living in Waukesha for almost 10 years.

These triplets don’t have any of those differences.  They were all born at the same time, in the same place and were brought home to the same house and have the same brother.  The only difference they have are their genetics.  It amazes me in how many possibilities two people really have when creating a baby.

1 egg + 1 ‘fishy’ = 3 VERY different little boys

The combinations and possibilities are endless.  One fussy baby vs one laid back, low-key baby.  Two babies who like to move and grove, almost rolling over and squirming out of their bouncy seats vs the other who just lays there and doesn’t really do much but smile.  Two babies with soft, silky skin vs one baby with eczema.

I am so excited to see them grow up and how they will continue to define themselves as individuals and how they will be similar.

I’m interested to see how Jaden will compare to his brothers too.  Having had a very different birth than the triplets, I wonder if this will affect him in any way.  Will the two of us have a different bond?  Will he ever feel the difference?  Or will the triplets feel it?  But which differences are a result of his birth order vs his genetics?  And is there any way to really tell?

One thing I did learn is that I make crazy faces at my kids.  I’m at full blame for Jaden’s animated facial expressions … Doug might have had a little something to do with it too. wink wink.  Let’s face it, our kids are destined to use large hand gestures and lots of facial expression.

An ex-coworker came over with her two girls for a playdate.  I took Claire (2 years old) to wash her hands.  I was helping her scrub her hands … singing some sort of made up song and she looked up at me like I was nuts!  I stopped dead in my tracks and was suddenly aware of what I must have looked like.  I am so used to Jaden and I goofing off together, I forgot that this was not the normal way people wash their hands.

My kids are destined to be weirdos … sorry boys!

Proof that Jaden is a weirdo just like his mother.  Wasn’t hard to find “a few” photos …

Oh wait … that last one was when I had Bell’s Palsy.  Whoops!

Kids are a mystery and gift from God.  Who knew I would be so blessed with not one, not two but FOUR beautiful boys!

Our Easter Extravaganza!

Our Easter morning started with the snooze button.  I had every intention of getting up at 5am so I could have time to shower and feed the babies before Jaden woke to find his basket.  That didn’t really happen.  We woke up at 7am … but Jaden was still sleeping!  I jumped into the shower and got Doug up after me.  By then, Jaden was awake and ready.

Picture Jaden running down the hallway, with his short legs, dressed in bright orange sweatpants and orange jack-o-lantern shirt.  Wrong holiday – silly boy!  In his basket there were three eggs.  Each egg had a picture drawn on it.  The first was the fridge.  Jaden ran to the refrigerator and found a Dr. Seuss book.  The next egg had a picture of a potty and sink.  Jaden knew right where that one was!  The bathroom, under the sink there was a marshmallow shooter.  This is sounding very strange as I write this down … what bunny hides presents under the sink next to a toilet.  Oh well!  The last egg had a picture of the oven where Jaden found the game Guess Who.  He was a very excited boy!

Once the eggs were all opened, we started getting all the boys ready for the trip up to GB.  We left only 20 mins behind schedule.  That’s only 5 mins per kid … not bad!

We were greeted with open arms by Doug’s mom and dad (as always).  Mom Bissing had an Easter egg hunt planned for the boys.  Jaden was in charge of finding all the eggs, even his brothers.  Each one had their own color.

Jaden and Eric went looking for the eggs.  Jaden would run back into the living room and hand Dad Bissing the egg.

Each egg had a strip of paper in it that said what prize the boys got.  There were shoes, books, toys and diapers for the boys.  Jaden got some candy, a book, toys, a new shirt.

I love how Jaden is standing with his hands in his pockets here … with everyone else looking at him.  Just waiting for what Jaden is going to do next.

The triplets, just hung out on a blanket on the floor.  Thanks to Mrs. Tully for the great first Easter outfits!

After lunch, we packed up to head to Great Grandma Van’s house.  Cracked me up seeing all three boys in their seats, wide awake!

It was a beautiful sunny day out, but still a little cold for the babies.  Logan looks like a nun in this picture!

The guys hung out in the usual circle of chairs, while the ladies were inside with the babies.

Great Grandma even had an Easter egg hunt for Jaden.  Can you say S-P-O-I-L-E-D?

Jaden tried to shoot out the egg with his gun …

no such luck!  Good thing Auntie Kris was there to lend a lift!

Great Grandma Van with her four great grandboys!

Funny how babies can turn grandpas into softies!

Jaden didn’t fall asleep at all on the car ride home.  Doug and I were really hoping for a little quiet time.  I swear that kid had something new to say every two miles.  ”Knock Knock, haven’t you ever heard of candy-are?” the joke on the Swedish fish egg box.  Or “Daddy, when we get home, wanna feel my muscles?”  Just random Jaden-isms.  He fell asleep as soon as his head hit his pillow at home.

I walked back into the kitchen to be greeted by this:  The aftermath of our GB trip.

I was too exhausted to unpack that night, but the trip was worth it!  As the boys get older, these trips are going to get crazier and crazier.  But in the best “this is my family” sort of way!
