ANNOUNCING – the Next Little Warrior Event!

I’m excited to announce the next Little Warrior event – the 2nd annual Christmas ornament drive benefiting the Interfaith Organization of Waukesha.  I have such wonderful memories of last year’s event, I just can’t wait to see the turn out this year!  It’s going to be bigger & better!!  So please, please, please register your kids, your friend’s kids, grand-kids, nieces, nephews, girl/boy scout troops, godchildren – all are welcome!

We will have 4-5 different ornament stations that you and your child(ren) can visit.  Pick one that you love or make one of each!  The projects are designed so that ALL ages can participate.  Last time we had 2 year olds all the way up to teenagers participate. It truly is fun for the whole family.

I personally invite each of you to join me (and all the Little Warrior volunteers) on November 17th (10am-12pm) at Ascension Lutheran Church – 1415 Dopp Street, Waukesha.  Please don’t feel that you have to be a believer to participate – this project isn’t a “christian thing” – it’s a “human thing”.  You just need to have a desire to help people – and the want to teach kids the importance of service to one another.

*Registration is appreciated – but not required

For complete details on the project visit:  www.owenslittlewarriors.com

DOWNLOAD A FLYER HERE – Print one for your fridge :)  Could you also help spread the word about Owen’s service project?  Post a flyer at the library, at your work, or your church, etc.

If you’re still not convinced, here is some food for thought on why joining us could be life changing – All of us at one point or another will need someone to help us.  By involving children in volunteerism at a young age, you are helping to create their perception of the world.  Plant the seed in them that they can make a difference.  Teach them to be Little Warriors who fight for the good in this world.

Let me know if you have any questions or comments – I love to hear from you all!

Love, Mel

One Christmas Down …

One Christmas down, two to go.

We spent last weekend visiting with Doug’s family.  I do have to say I had a blast!  I spent some awesome time with my sister-in-law, Sherri.  Doug and I got along wonderfully (not always the case when we travel haha).  The kids were all spoiled rotten – exactly what is supposed to happen when they visit grandma’s house.

I wish I had some profound post today.  I wish I had a direct link to say what I was thinking.  Truth is, I’m not sure what I am feelings these days. Perhaps I’m numb.  Perhaps I’m being protected by prayer and God to enjoy this holiday.

One thing I’m learning is that the days that I think are going to be the hardest are usually not.  It’s the days where grief hits me by surprise that I hit rock bottom.

I keep looking for some pain that will vibrate through my soul.  I sat with Sherri one morning and watched a bunch of videos of Owen I found randomly on the Flip we brought.  I almost forgot how really doe-like his eyes were.  He would look up at you with these dark, calm, big eyes.

Watching his face have life in movies hurts more than just looking at his photo or his hand print.  It’s the evidence that there was once life that stabs me.  I physically feel the poking at my chest.

The memories of his life are becoming more grey.  They were vivid.  Like when I think back to yesterday, my memories have bright colors, sounds and smells with them.  When I think back to when Owen was rolling around on the living room floor, it’s more still images.  Muted colors.  Not sure what I might hear.  The memories aren’t really fading, they are just changing – becoming more concrete in time.  Stone like.

Perhaps it’s the stone memories that I feel these days.  I’m sure I will be ripped open again – without warning.  The wounds fresh and raw.  But for now, I am able to enjoy the Christmas with my boys – all of them.

Just a few more gifts to wrap – a few more sweets to bake.  Christmas is almost here! I am looking forward to spending time with my family – and having Doug home from work for a few days.

Sending Christmas blessings and prayers to all of you!

Love, Mel

Auntie Sherri & Logan

Jaden with his gift from Great Grandma

Logan’s eyes are hilarious in this one!

Grandkids with Grandma

The triplets got a sugar cookie as dessert for breakfast, lunch and dinner!

Doug brought 16 lbs of cheese (or at least it seemed like it) – here he is cutting up a buffet of his cheese. So serious ….

A Bissing Christmas tradition – pickled Herring – never understood it … but I tried it this year.  Just a little bit.  It’s not horrible, but I don’t think I’ll ever get excited over it.

Jaden took a traveling troll with him from 4K.  Here they are right before handing out presents!

Mom Bissing’s beautiful tree :)

Jaden practicing his photography skills … no too bad!

Weston looks up to no good!

Logan’s face is hilarious!

Weston & Logan got chairs, just their size and in their colors.

The FEAST of food before we started ….

The FEAST after … I swear we all stuffed our faces!  Doesn’t look like we even dented all the deliciousness.

Kids Meet Santa

Last night we headed out to Richfield for a pizza party with Santa.  Doug’s company throws a kid’s party each year.  The babies were totally spoiled – so many ladies to hold and love them.  Jaden was off playing with his new car toy and making crafts.  It was a really great night (as always with DCI). Tried to take a nice photo in front of the blow up snowman – wasn’t quite happy with the first one …

But they didn’t sit long enough for a second one …

Jaden sat right at Santa’s feet.  He was SO excited!  Santa even asked him to sit on his lap while they sang Jingle Bells.

Weston started out ok … but really didn’t dig the big guy in the white beard.

Logan inspected the beard …

and was totally fine!

Jaden was super excited to sit on Santa’s lap … and as past years, changed what he wanted from Santa again … sheesh!

Xmas Preparations

As everyone else is, I’ve been super busy getting ready for Christmas.  We are celebrating with Doug’s family this weekend … so I really have until tomorrow night to have all my Bissing Christmas stuff done.  It’s making my palms sweat just typing about it.

So I’ve been busy … but there is always time in my schedule for some good music.  Music has brought me comfort in my darkest times and it’s also been there for my best of times.  My favorite one-armed musician, Tony Memmel (also writer and singer of Owen’s Song) just released a new Christmas music video.

Take some time, listen to this catchy tune and enjoy!  Remember to take five minutes a day to yourself. (That might be more of a reminder to myself these days …)

Love, Mel

The rest of the weekend

After our traditional Black Friday shopping, we hit the road later on Friday morning and headed up to DePere (Green Bay area) to visit Doug’s family. I am really lucky that I really love my in-laws and Doug’s extended family.

On Saturday we headed up to Doug’s grandma’s house to make holiday candy and cookies with all of his aunts. The tradition wouldn’t have been complete without stopping for cup of coffee first. The drive-thru line was long so I decided to run in quick. Everything has a reason. I had the blessing of meeting a blog reader (Hi Katee!) When a blog reader introduces themselves, it’s like a little hug from God. A nod from the big guy that I’m on the right path and I’m following his word. These encounters usually happen on the hardest of days or the days that I could use help to smile. I am always humbled by the words and kindness I receive from these meetings.

Saturday could have been a really hard Owen day … I was all worked up. It was the 6 month “anniversary.” The term anniversary is almost sickening … it’s not something to celebrate. I often thought about what that day was going to be like. 6 months later, gone almost as long as he was alive. How was I going to feel? I was on egg shells, just waiting for grief to knock me over the head and take over the day.

A piece of “advice” we talked about in my grief support group was to let your wishes be known. Let your family know when you want to do something in memory of your loved one. So I did … I brought an orange candle and asked that we light it. I spoke his name when I was thinking about him. It helped. The aunts chimed in. We cried, we laughed. We remembered what it was like to be in the hospital. Grief was still visiting … still pulling at my heart-strings, but family came together and didn’t let it steal the day.

We created memories. True, Owen should have been there to complete it, but he wasn’t. It’s the just facts. He wasn’t there but we were.

Here are a few pictures from the day:

Al the ladies sitting around the table (taking a small break from all our cooking)

Abby & Nya were loving the babies!  Here is Abby having her turn at feeding Weston.

Doug’s cousin Kayla feeding Logan

All I had to do was say “squeeze in for a picture” and this is what I got!  Such good picture-taking kids we have in our family!

Owen’s light

The kid’s table at Great-Grandmas.  Doug eat many meals at this same table.  In fact, he wrote his name in a Sharpie on the chair Logan is sitting at.  The first time Jaden was over, he had to write his name on the other “just like daddy.”  His name is on Weston’s chair.

That face that Weston makes gets me every time …

What grandma doesn’t love naked babies in her sink??  Auntie Krissy gave him a mohawk – lookin’ good!

Nya was super excited to help with Weston’s bath.  Weston wasn’t digging the bath that night though …

Here is all of our hard work!

At the end of the night, Logan – so fresh and so clean after his bath – sat belly up to the table and helped himself to hand full after hand full of popcorn puffs.

It was a really nice visit in Green Bay.  I only wish we could visit more often.  It’s hard since my side of the family doesn’t see each other any more.  They are the only extended family I have.  So … they kind of are stuck with me :)

First Ever Little Warriors Event = Success!

This past Saturday was the first ever Little Warriors event … and let me tell  you … it was a huge success!  We had five different ornaments to make as well as a birthday card making station.  About 50 kids participated and made over 250 ornaments!

There were so many moments when I stood back, looked around the gym and thought “wow Owen, you brought all of these people here today.”  I haven’t spoken to my grandma in years however, I remember in college I had to interview her for a class project.  I remember her saying that one of her most profound moments was one holiday when she sat back and thought “All of these people are here because of me.”  I now know the very feeling she was describing.

I’m not sure what I enjoyed the most … all of the owenge in one place, the santa hats or the fact that all of these children were learning how to love and serve others.  Perhaps it’s all of the above.

I had such wonderful volunteers – there is no way I would have been able to pull this off without them.   I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they are willing to help me with more events to come!

Here are a “few” photos from the day’s festivities!!!

My brother, Jake, “manning” the hot glue table.  We won’t mention how much of the hot glue we were picking off of the table during clean up…

Parents helping their little ones make  beautiful glittery snowflakes.

Got to love a dad who is willing to craft with his daughter!

There is always a good reason to wear a tiara!  Too bad I forgot mine at home :)  Next time ….

Just look at how happy he is!

So proud of his reindeer ornament!   As he should be!!  It’s AWESOME!

Even the little ones were learning and making new friends!

This little man made me smile on more than occasion on Saturday.  First, he sat down at the puzzle wreath station and tried to put the puzzle together!  I love the way kid’s minds work.  Made sense to me!  Then, after going a little ‘crazy’ with the stickers, he was told only one more … he quickly took two more and stuck one on each cheek.  That’s exactly how I saw him marching around the rest of the event :)  He made me smile.

This is Sam.  Every time I try to take a picture of him (at a few Supermom’s events this past summer and Saturday), he shows me a serious face.  Like “Listen lady … I don’t know you and I’m not going to smile.  You are crazy.”   He’s got one thing right … I am crazy! We did happen to sneak this great photo of him!  I love Sam and his mom Amy!  (a fellow Supermom at church)

This family touched my heart beginning a few months ago.  I was sitting in church, wearing my bright orange striped skirt and Pastor announces that there is going to be a baptism.  I gasp for air – triplets.  All dressed up in their Sunday best.  Looking into the baptismal fountain, playing with their dresses.  Everything 3 year olds are supposed to do.  Their little sister Nellie is being baptized.  It was was most beautiful and painful sight.  There is just such a magical difference from seeing two smiles to three.  I can’t explain it.  I notice the difference when we have a play date.  Three is magic.  Perhaps it’s the spiritual number 3.  Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  I’m am so grateful that this fellow family of triplets took time out of their weekend to attend the Little Warrior event.  I was able to hang out with them a little – I learned that one of the girl’s favorite color is purple.  As the triplet’s went bounding out the door to leave – I know Kelly could see the slight pain in my eyes – but I meant it when I said “just beautiful.”

Check out just a very small fraction of all the ornaments made!  Hindsight, I should have taken the large eye balls away from the reindeer station … next time!

I love Anna’s smile!

Another dad hard at crafting!

Ok – my one regret – having Sharpie markers at the reindeer table to trace hands.  Probably not a good move – DUH!  As my wise sister said “we want you to remember today for a very long time!”  I hope the mom’s weren’t too mad at me.  I practiced with a ball point pen, but you couldn’t see it on the dark brown.  So I figured a sharpie would work – wasn’t thinking about the permanent part.  whoops!

Had to get a little baby fix!  Kristi’s son, Aiden, played on Jaden’s soccer team this past summer.  I remember fondly watching what a cute preggo Kristi was … long before we made the connection that we both went to Ascension!  And now I can say I held the cute Grayson monkey :)

At the last minute, Sara and I decided to make completion certificates for the kid-os.  Lordy were they a hit!  Kids were jumping up and down – doing a happy dance when we gave them their certificate.  I think we’ll have to keep up with this part of the event!

Here are the triplets - beautiful!

An entire village of penguins!

Everything was beautiful!  The ornaments, the volunteers, the love, the kids.  It was wonderful.  The right size – not too big, not too small.  It was the perfect venue (HUGE thank you to Summit View Elementary for letting us use their gym).  As Owen’s mom, I was so proud.  To know that the happiness and smiles were going to keep branching out really spoke to me.  I know that I am following God’s path.  With Owen being an organ donor Doug and I often spoke about Owen’s love and giving being multiplied.  First it was three donor recipients, then when we found out his kidney went to science we tried to imagine how many more lives would be saved.  The number is infinite.  The same with the event.  The smiles started in the gym, with the kids and parents.  Then the smiles pass on to the grand-friends who will receive these ornaments … then who knows!

I’m looking forward to planning more of these kinds of events.  I’m working hard on getting a little warriors website up – to connect families with “regularly offered” service opportunities as well as special Owen events.  I hope I have more to share in the new year … fingers crossed earlier.

Thank you again to everyone who made this event a success.  Jesus loves you and so do I!

Love, Mel

Christmas Day 2010

Jaden woke us up nice and early!  So excited to open presents!  It was sort of nice cuz he woke us up before the babies woke up for their breakfast.  The three of us were able to open up gifts and I could fully focus on Jaden.

Santa brought gifts for all the kids, but Jaden had no interest in opening up the baby’s gifts.

Mom andDad Bissing were going to be down at 2pm but Eric and Sherri came over at 10am.  I made a brunch for us.  I’d never had Monkey Bread before but heard how easy and delicious it was.  OMG there are not words to explain how fantastic it is!  I think we have a newly added tradition – not to replace the Breakfast Casserole of course!

Who is having more fun – Eric or Jaden?

Another outfit a la Rachael!  Weston (middle) looks like he is up to no good!  Plotting against the world …

and now he’s pissed!

Opening up gifts from Grandma and Grandpa – Jaden got 17 POUNDS of Moon Dough! Ahh haha  Jaden loves the stuff but Doug HATES it.  Let’s be honest, it makes a HUGE mess.  I think I sweep up more of it than put it back in the container.  We sent the boys down to the basement to watch a movie while Jaden, Laura and I played with it on the dining room floor.  Wow-wee did we make a mess but Jaden had so much fun!  AND I made sure to have it all picked up before Doug could catch us.  Not even a picture to incriminate us!

Proud Grandpa

Look at all that food!  We pigged out for two days straight!

Does this capture Doug’s booming laugh or what?

This picture looks like Jaden is having fun in the shower – WRONG!  I believe he is yelling at me that I was using the wrong camera.  He wanted me to take video and not still pictures.  That kid was whining and crying the whole time.  He was itchy, spoiled and over tired!  Pretty awesome picture tho!

Day after Christmas – everyone came back over for lunch and an afternoon of hanging out.  Mom and Sherri went right for the babies  :)

Notice the leftover Monkey Bread on the counter – not much left.  That’s because I inhaled it the night before giving me guy rot in the middle of the night!  I don’t think I’ve eaten myself sick since I was a kid.  Embarrassing …

Jaden got to playing Wii – what a game face.  That kid takes it so seriously!

All three girls right after a feeding.  On Christmas day every time Laura held, touched or even looked at baby they seemed to loose it and cry – poor Laura!  The next day was MUCH better!  Logan looks pretty darn happy snuggling in Laura’s tata’s – atta boy!

It was a great Bissing two days!  LOTS of loud laughing and joking.  I found out how small my house really is :)   But then again no matter where we have our get togethers I think it would always be loud.  I honestly had so much fun.  How did I get to be so lucky – triplets AND amazing in-laws?  Dang!

Christmas Eve 2010

First Christmas as a family of six!  We usually spend Christmas day with my family – but since we weren’t going to be able make it to GB this year, we spent Christmas Eve with my family and Doug’s family came down for Christmas day.  We got to Mom’s right away in the morning after we got all the kid-os packed up.  I tried to think of everything we could possibly need for a day long visit.  We had three bags for just the babies!  One for my pump and bottles, one for diapers and such and one for extra clothes.  I might have over done it a tad, but I wanted to be sure I didn’t forget anything!  I think the day is best told in pictures (taken with my new Nikon D90 of course!)

Breakfast casserole … I LIVE for this Christmas breakfast tradition.  I think we’ve been having this for breakfast since I was in middle school – that would be since 1997!  A thirteen year tradition.

The feeding party!  Takes an army to feed the Bissing boys!  Uncle Jake – looking like a pro!

Do you SEE that bald spot!  It’s huge!  And Owen is the only one that has one.  Is his head shaped that differently from his brothers?  I know that babies loose their hair a lot of the time from laying in their cribs but dang! It kind of reminds me of the bald spot I got from being in the hospital after my car accident … only my head is a lot bigger than Owen’s and my spot was a lot smaller.

Drunk on milk …

Super Weston to the rescue!   Doesn’t his bib look like a superman cape?

Jaden got Snail’s Pace Race – the game where no one wins.  Now what kind of game is that … honestly?  No one wins?  Why bother playing?  But my Jaden LOVES the game!

Jaden is so excited to open up presents from his Emily!

He opens a Spiderman puzzle and slams is against his head – “I already have this one!” he says!  We are still working on the present opening manners.  We sort of got the hang of it after a while.  He opened a deck of cards from YaYa and Pa and mumbled.  When I said “Jaden …”  he perked up right away and said “Thank you” is his nicest voice.  What a stinker!  At least he shows signs of being trained.

A while later, he opened a box of PJs, a coat and a fleece from YaYa and Pa.  He rolls his eyes and goes “oh man … you spent too much money on me!”  Does that sound like anyone you know?  DOUG!  Like father like son!  The best part?  We got it on tape!

Emily meets the babies!

Mama holding all three.

Family shot – Jaden KNOWS he’s the cool older brother in this one!

TiTi bought the triplets a Christmas outfit – picture doesn’t show it but the sleepers say “Auntie’s nice list”.

Owen (left) is flexing his muscles for all the pretty ladies!  Check out that double chin!

The whole family!  I learned how to set my timer for this one!

YaYa told Jaden the Christmas story and about baby Jesus.  Jaden later told me how “the angel said do not be afraid.”  It amazes me how Jaden has a natural interest in Jesus.

Dad’s famous grasshoppers.  If you haven’t had one of my dad’s grasshoppers then you have not had a real grasshopper!  These have been apart of my Christmas Eve memories since … well … forever.  In fact dad used to make a kid’s one (non-alcoholic) when we were younger.  One year he got creative and made them red (turned out to be more pink).  It was that year I found out he didn’t even put mint in kid’s ones!  Are you kidding me?  I had been eating them for YEARS and had always thought they were minty.  Then to top it off, Rachael told me it was Miss Piggy puke (since it was a pink color that year).  Ruined the whole thing for me.  I couldn’t finish mine.  Now I get to have the adult ones tho … and I KNOW those ones have mint in them!

Our kid’s gift exchange – boys vs girls.  Doug and Jake ended up trading gift cards to Game Stop!  They are so original!  I, on the other hand, got trifty and made Rachael a bunch of “head accessories”.  I made her a bunch of headbands and clips with flowers and such.  Rachael got me a few kitchen gadgets.  You know you are getting old when you enjoy getting kitchen gadgets as gifts!  She also got me this amazing coffee mug, a scarf with hood and mittens!  She didn’t like the plain black gloves I was wearing from the Dollar Store.  You know the stretchy kind we wore as kids?  Yea … Rachael has always been cooler than me.

Nada and Lindsey came over to see the babies too (and have a beer).  What a combo – beer and babies!  My two favorite “B”s!

When we got home Jaden put out cookies and milk for Santa.  We fed the babies and all got a good night sleep.  It was a great first Christmas with the babies!  Next year will be a whole new story – hoping we make it up to GB for Great Grandma Van’s celebration.

Love, Mel

Gingerbread Casas – Some Assembly Required

The day for me to go somewhere on my own with the kids arrived.  Every year we have a cousin Christmas get together at my moms.  The same afternoon I had my six-week follow-up appointment.  It didn’t make sense for me to drive out there for my appointment, back into Sussex to pick up the kids and back to Waukesha again for the party.  So, I decided it made “sense” to bring the babies with me to my doc appointment.   I put on my big girl pants, packed up all four kids and headed into Waukesha for an afternoon doc appointment and an evening of cousins. I don’t know who was more nervous, me or Doug!  Before leaving, Doug gave Jaden the talk that he needed to be a big helper since I was on my own, and boy was he!

It was the little things that helped out a lot.  For example, I didn’t think thru how I was going to load the stroller because, the genius who invented the Triple Decker stroller decided that it didn’t need brakes!  Probably because no sane person would go out in public alone with three infants haha!  The no brake issue hasn’t been a problem before since it’s always been Doug and I, but when you are alone in a parking structure it can be a little interesting.  Jaden stepped in and helped out though!

Mom met us in the waiting room to help watch Jaden while I had my appointment.  There was just enough room to wheel in the stroller … no turns or maneuvering was allowed.  Nurses had to come to us to get a peek.  When I went down the line unzipping the kid’s car seat covers, I discovered a Batman comic book in Logan’s car seat!  Big brother packed it for him so he could read … ha  And Jaden continues to see what he can get away with!

After the doctor I had some hats, clothes and a Christmas card to drop off at the NICU.  All the ladies were so excited to see the boys!  We caused quite the back up in front of the NICU, but they were so happy to see them it was TOTALLY worth it!  The double pom pom hats I made for the boys.  While I had made two to donate, I think I’ll have to keep making them!  It was about a three hour adventure, but we made all of our stops and back into the car safely.  Next stop, YaYa’s house!

The past few cousin get-togethers we’ve made sugar cookies, but this year we thought it would be fun to have a gingerbread house competition.  Mom even googled to find a house that Jaden would be able to touch, decorate and eat!  It’s all Jaden could talk about for a week and a half!

We divide into three teams: girl, boys and me/Jaden.  We open up the box to Jaden’s house and wouldn’t you know … it’s not assembled!  The other two kits were ready to decorate.  How do you tell Jaden we can’t decorate it tonight?  Simple, you don’t! I make the frosting and set to work right away, keeping him occupied with occasional squirts of frosting in his mouth.  I get all four walls up – no problem!  When the first side of the roof goes up it gets a little tricky … it slides one way, and then the other.  What a disaster!  But no to fear, Jaden has happy as a clam as long as he could keep eating the candies!  I finally gave up … Jaden didn’t seem to care.  Rather than a ginger bread house to decorate, we had a gingerbread pile!  I think we won the competition hands down!

Now all hyped up on sugar, we loaded all the kids for the ride home.  Jaden crashed from his sugar high before we even made it to the freeway.  The first outing alone with the four kids was a success!  I think I could do it again … well maybe not any time too soon, but definitely again some time.

Meeting Auntie Sherri!

The last (but not least) member of our immediate family finally got to meet the boys on 12/23!!  Sherri flew in from Nashville on the 22nd and was to our house bright and early on the morning of the 23rd to meet her three newest nephews.  If you know and love Sherri, you know there were tears (of happiness of course!)
