24 Crazy Hours

My cute triplet boys are quickly unraveling out of control!  Just last week, Weston learned how to climb out of his crib … and it’s only gotten worse!

Let me preface this story by saying this all takes place within 24 hours – and Doug is traveling for business.

Yesterday, the triplets went down for their naps as normal.  I enjoyed the peace and quiet.  Emptied the dish washer.  Made a few phone calls.  Finished counting some of the sales from the rummage sale this past weekend.  I was on the phone with a client (I’m helping a military couple plan their wedding in Milwaukee) when I heard the boys start to giggle and talk back and forth.  I remember thinking “Ok I’ve got to wrap this up … I’ve only got a few minutes before hell breaks loose.”

I was just getting off the phone when I heard a big thud.  It sounded like a battery operated owl candle that is sitting on top of the bookcase.  I figured Logan must have found something to throw at it.  Then the noise I never expected to hear …. the sound of the door trying to be opened from the inside.  One of them was out of their cribs again!  I quickly got up to see who it was … and to my surprise it was LOGAN!

Great, now I have two 17 month olds who know how to climb out of their cribs.  I am SO not ready for toddler beds!

The rest of the day was pretty well-behaved.  My mom watched the kids so I could go see a possible wedding venue for the wedding I’m helping with (thank you YaYa!) and they were in bed and sleeping by the time I got home.

This morning I could hear them start to cry around 6:30am.  I drifted in and out of sleep while they were playing and occupying themselves.  I finally dragged myself out of bed around 7:15.

Well the first thing I noticed was that Logan was bottomless … diaper and all.  He was flapping in the wind!  (and loving the fresh air I might add)  Then I saw Weston.  He had rocked back and forth in his crib to move it back against the wall – so he was just in reach of the humidifier.  He had the humidifier by the cord and had tipped it on its side, with the water pouring out onto the floor.  I walked over to stop him and stepped into a puddle of something wet on the floor.  Logan had peed in between the crib rails and on to his bummer and on the floor.  Yep … it was gonna be one of those days!

I managed to get a diaper on Logan and get most of the mess cleaned up before I had to focus on getting Jaden ready for school.  I surprisingly got him out the door with a minute to spare.  I no sooner watched the bus drive by, when I heard the garbage can lid shut. Have I told you my kids are part racoon and like to eat out of the garbage?  I hurried into the kitchen to find the boys shaking the empty Bugles bag over their head.  The itty bitty crumbs were flying all over the kitchen like confetti!  AHHHH STOP!!!  I grabbed the broom and swept it all in the corner.  I didn’t even bother to get the dust pan at this point.  WE. MUST. GET. OUT. OF. THIS. HOUSE!

So I tackled each kid to the floor, wrestled some pants and socks on each of them and we headed out to run some errands.  Cars are one of the few places its preferred to strap your kids down so they can’t move :)

Now brace yourself if you happen to work in retail.  I did too…but DANG what are these companies thinking?  They brand themselves for being a one stop shop for the soccer mom … yet they don’t carry carts that hold more than one kid.  I could bring in my stroller, but the point of walking around your store is to buy stuff, right?  I walked in one end of the Super Wal-Mart to find only ‘regular’ carts.   I walked to the complete other end of the building to see if there was one there. YES I found one!  Crap … both straps are shredded and useless.

Tell me, why do you even bother having this cart out?  Just to tease us moms with more than one child?  I can hear WalMart talking to me:  Haha you could have shopped with your kids buckled safely, but as payment for having a litter of children you now have the pleasure of wrestling your toddlers to sit in the basket of the cart while you price compare every item (so you can afford your family of four or more).  We sure do hope your children don’t fall out and break their heads.  We apologize for any inconvenience.

Needless to say by the time we were ready to check out, Weston had taken a bite of a banana peel, was slightly covered in banana juice from sitting on the bunch, the bread had a footprint in it and the envelope to the birthday card I bought was crumpled in a ball.

Just when you think you might lose it … the only lanes that were open were express!  Yep, 10 items or less.  I said “screw that!”  and I checked out through the express lane with my 30+ items … proudly.  haha

I’m pretty sure running errands was still more enjoyable than staying home this morning … but yet again, I emphasise … this was only the last 24 hours.  What other choice do I have but to laugh?

Here’s to the next 17 years being even more crazy!  and thank goodness for wine!

Love, Mel

Proud to be a Mama

I was reminded of how special it is to be a mom this morning.  We started out the day with the usual chaos … Jaden not being able to decide what he wants for breakfast, all of the triplets wanting to be fed at once, Jaden climbing on my lap while I’m trying to pump, and my overwhelming need for coffee growing!

It just so happens that today is also Pajama day at school.  Picture Jaden jumping around in his Iron Man jammies.  We had to pick out one … not two – not ten … one stuffed animal to share.  I was actually pretty impressed that Jaden only went thru three before making his selection … a ragged bunny.  Of all the stuffed animals – Curious George, an adorable leopard, cookie monster – he chose a small bunny that we won at some carnival.  He was happy with it and we were running out of time so it went in the backpack.

Then the struggle of getting dressed in our outdoor gear.  It took me three times of asking him directly, two threats to turn off the TV and we were FINALLY dressed.  Only, he didn’t want to wear his gloves.  “Fine” I said … but I was carrying my coffee mug so I wouldn’t be able to help him put them on outside.  He reassured me that he did not want his gloves on and he wanted to put his hands in his pockets.  Again, we were running out of time so away we went!

Right as we step outside and I close the door behind us, that’s when I start to love taking Jaden to the bus stop.  Our walks are filled with crazy stories from Jaden and discussions on what we plan to do when he gets home from school.  When we get to the bus stop (only two driveways down) we are greeted by our new neighbor friends.

Of course, just after arriving, Jaden wants his gloves on.  I remind him that I said I wouldn’t be able to help and he’ll have to try himself.  He tried … really tried and just couldn’t do it.  He started to get upset – I didn’t want him to break down in front of his new friends so I put my coffee down in the road and kneeled down to help him.  Just as I got the second glove on, the bus rounded the corner.  The neighbor kids lined up, ready to board the bus … and here is where my most favorite part of my morning happens….

Jaden gave me a huge hug and kiss – right on the lips!  My heart melts as I am totally aware that the bus driver and the other kids are watching.  Jaden starts to climb the bus stairs, turns around on the second stair and blows me more kisses – rapid fire!  Gosh … I melt.  Oozing inside with love and of course being a proud mama.

So I spend my morning missing Jaden and anticipating him getting home from school.  I usually get out to the bus stop too early … I’m so nervous I’ll miss the bus so I end up standing out there like a moron.  I wonder what the neighbors or the cars that drive by think I’m doing … a grown adult just standing on the side of the road with a cup of coffee in her hand.  Freak!  When the bus comes – Jaden is sleeping on the bus so I have to climb aboard and wake him up.

Then reality sets in … and all sanity breaks loose and we REALLY begin our day.  Jaden is such a goofy, funny kid – I want to find a way to channel his energy into something positive.  The phone actually just ran – it was the library.  The Love and Logic book I put on hold is in!  Things are going to change around here!  Maybe I’ll feel all ooey and gooey inside all day long … haha yeah right!

First Day of the Rest of My Life

Today was the first day of being a true stay-at-home mom of four kids.  Jaden no longer attends daycare and catches the bus to and from school at home. The bus comes at 8:23am.  I’d been thinking thru the morning schedule for days now – do I feed the kids before taking Jaden to the bus or do I wait until I get back?  Do I have time to pump or can I put it off until the threelets are fed?  All of these questions I was too overwhelmed to really plan out so I figured – what the heck, I’ll just take the morning as it comes and figure what will work best later.

Doug woke me up before he left for work and I rolled my butt out of bed and made a pot of coffee right away.  Got Jaden dressed and fed him breakfast (which I later found Doug had also fed him breakfast).  Filled my new coffee mug (courtesy of Rachael) and put on my new hat (product of a stress relieving trip to Wal-Mart).  Jaden got his boots, hat and sky goggles on (I couldn’t talk him out of the goggles).  You can imagine what the two of us looked like as we walked down the street – sky goggles and mom pjs.  Right as I stepped out the front door, I thought something was a rye since there were no kids at the corner.  But I thought, maybe the bus comes a little after 8:23.  So we walked to the corner and waited.  10 mins later the bus hadn’t come and the other kids were no where in sight.  My fear became reality – we missed the bus on the very first day!  CRAP now what was I going to do?

I debated leaving the triplets in their cribs as I jumped in the car – but figured that move wouldn’t earn me the mother of the year award.  So … I started packing.  Threw a hat on each baby and covered the car seats with blankets.  Got all three clicked into the car – buckled Jaden into his car seat – turned the Chipmunks movie on the DVD player and backed the minivan out of the driveway.  The drive to school was shorter than the time it took me to load the car!  The secretary was waiting at the door for us at Willow Springs so I didn’t have to walk Jaden into school.  When the van door opened Jaden took off running to say hi to his friend Luke.  It took me calling his name seven times before he realized he didn’t have his backpack on.  He came back, grabbed his backpack and forgot to give me a kiss goodbye.  But darn it – we made it to school!  Phew!

What a way to kick off our new routine!  Proof that from here on out, I just need to hold on for dear life.  It’s going to be a crazy ride and no use getting stressed.  So what if Jaden wears his underwear backwards – at least he’s got some on, right?  I got dressed this morning – but was threw up on, not by one child, but three!  Guess what – I actually had time to shave my legs this morning!  Or – oops I have the kids all in the wrong car seats, but they were all buckled up!

So very different than my well planned days in the corporate office.  My perfect cup of coffee poured and back at my desk each morning by 8:20.  But those stories wouldn’t make for a very interesting blog, now would it?  Well aren’t you in luck that my life has just gotten interesting!  Here’s to being a true stay-at-home mom to four boys under the age of four!  I hope you buckled your seat belt, it’s going to be a wild ride.
