Music & Muffins 2012

Doug is finally home from his business trip!  Now there is at least a 1:1 ratio of parent to crazy toddler :)

This morning, I heard Jaden ask Doug if he was going to come to his Music and Muffins concert.  (Mind you I asked Doug WEEKS ago if he thought he would be able to go …)  Doug asked Jaden what it was all about.  Jaden said “Well we are singing … so there is music.  And then when we are done, we have muffins … and there is milk.  You love milk Dad.  Want to come?”  What a charmer!  And it worked too!  Doug called into the office this morning to let them know he was going to take a half day of vacation.

Jaden was super excited to see us all there.  Here is a video of his performance:

So Jaden might not have a career in singing & hand movements.  Did you notice the striped tie with his plaid shirt?  That was ALL him this morning :)  The bus driver even commented this afternoon that he is his best dressed student. Oh Jaden …

It was a great day today!  Not only was Jaden the proudest kid at school because his dad was there … but we also had our first family bonfire in the fire pit Doug gave me for Mother’s Day last year.

It’s the little things these days that reminds me to keep fighting.  Not going to lie, I’ve started to think and worry about May 26, 2012 already.   It was nice to have a pleasant and calm day to offset the worry.

Love, Mel

Listening

A while ago I went to watch Tony Memmel play in a coffee shop downtown Waukesha.  He played Owen’s Song … let me tell you it’s even better live than as a recording.  I don’t know what it is about his music that soothes my soul … but whatever it is it sure does the trick.

Today while working on a bunch of Little Warriors stuff (more details coming soon!) I had my iTunes playing in the background.  I had totally forgotten about this video until this morning.  I had to watch it again.  I’m so proud of Owen.  I’m proud to say that I am his mom.  I’m honored that God chose me as his parent.  I don’t know what I did to deserve him, but it must have been something good.  I’m certian I can say this about each of my four boys.  Even though Owen is gone, he’s one of the biggest blessings in my life.

As I pause from my work, I close my eyes and I just listen.  I listen to the sound of Tony’s voice, I listen to the words he sings.  I just take a minute to listen.  It gives me just a moment to find my balance again before facing the next challenge of the day.

Love, Mel

ps please forgive me for singing along :)

Xmas Preparations

As everyone else is, I’ve been super busy getting ready for Christmas.  We are celebrating with Doug’s family this weekend … so I really have until tomorrow night to have all my Bissing Christmas stuff done.  It’s making my palms sweat just typing about it.

So I’ve been busy … but there is always time in my schedule for some good music.  Music has brought me comfort in my darkest times and it’s also been there for my best of times.  My favorite one-armed musician, Tony Memmel (also writer and singer of Owen’s Song) just released a new Christmas music video.

Take some time, listen to this catchy tune and enjoy!  Remember to take five minutes a day to yourself. (That might be more of a reminder to myself these days …)

Love, Mel

ps Share the video with your friends and family!

Owen’s Song

There aren’t words to describe how excited I am to share this news with you!  Those of you who were able to attend Owen’s funeral know who Tony Memmel is.  He honored my family by singing He is My Son and Amazing Grace.  It was a few weeks later that I ran into Tony and jokingly asked him if he had ever recorded Amazing Grace and if he hadn’t would he consider calling my cell phone and leaving me a message with him singing.  The song brought such comfort.  I love the sound of his voice.  In the words of my mother “his music soothes my soul.”

See, when all my triplets were here with me, we used to dance to Tony’s music while making dinner.  The Bissing family minivan often played Tony’s music on our few outting with all three babies.  Tony and I went to high school together … he was actually a friend of my sisters at the time.  When he released his first CD, I remember going to my first Tony show when he played in Oshkosh (where my sister went to college).  To sum it up, I’m a fan of Tony Memmel music.

When Tony wrote me to offer writing a song about Owen I was so excited,  honored, humbled, nervous … you get the picture.  I’ve been keeping a lid on this exciting news until now!   The song is finished and it’s awesome.  I’m so excited to share it with you.  It’s available for download here:  http://tonymemmel.bandcamp.com/  It’s called “Owen’s Song.”

***

Here are the lyrics:

As the sun sets in the sky
brightens up the deepest night.
Orange flowers by the road
I smile to myself and know

You’re already home
and I’ll be with you when the day is done.

Somedays I still get bogged down
fog so thick it’s water now.
I carry on. I go on my way.
I think about you every day.

You’re already home
and I’ll be with you when the day is done.

Jesus, can ya hear me sing?
Why is all this happening?
We were all just born to run
we’ll still be dancin’ way after the music’s done.

You’re already home
and I’ll be with you when the day is done.

***

Words can’t express my gratitude to Tony and his wife, Leslie for taking the time and thought to write and record this song.  As a mother, I’m so proud of my son Owen.  He has a song written after him for gosh sakes!!

Please enjoy the song as my family and I celebrate the triplet’s birthday this weekend.  And know that Owen is already home.

Love, Mel
