Triple Wonder

Like so many times before, I am captured by the awesomeness of having triplets.  As these boys grow bigger, their personalities are becoming more and more defined.

I think of how different my brother, sister and I are from each other.  Sure we have lots in common, but we are all very different.  So often we credit these differences to our birth order – or that our family was in a much different place when we were born.  For example, my parents lived in Chicago and were learning how to make their way in the world when I was born.  My brother on the other hand, was born when my dad had settled into his career and we had been living in Waukesha for almost 10 years.

These triplets don’t have any of those differences.  They were all born at the same time, in the same place and were brought home to the same house and have the same brother.  The only difference they have are their genetics.  It amazes me in how many possibilities two people really have when creating a baby.

1 egg + 1 ‘fishy’ = 3 VERY different little boys

The combinations and possibilities are endless.  One fussy baby vs one laid back, low-key baby.  Two babies who like to move and grove, almost rolling over and squirming out of their bouncy seats vs the other who just lays there and doesn’t really do much but smile.  Two babies with soft, silky skin vs one baby with eczema.

I am so excited to see them grow up and how they will continue to define themselves as individuals and how they will be similar.

I’m interested to see how Jaden will compare to his brothers too.  Having had a very different birth than the triplets, I wonder if this will affect him in any way.  Will the two of us have a different bond?  Will he ever feel the difference?  Or will the triplets feel it?  But which differences are a result of his birth order vs his genetics?  And is there any way to really tell?

One thing I did learn is that I make crazy faces at my kids.  I’m at full blame for Jaden’s animated facial expressions … Doug might have had a little something to do with it too. wink wink.  Let’s face it, our kids are destined to use large hand gestures and lots of facial expression.

An ex-coworker came over with her two girls for a playdate.  I took Claire (2 years old) to wash her hands.  I was helping her scrub her hands … singing some sort of made up song and she looked up at me like I was nuts!  I stopped dead in my tracks and was suddenly aware of what I must have looked like.  I am so used to Jaden and I goofing off together, I forgot that this was not the normal way people wash their hands.

My kids are destined to be weirdos … sorry boys!

Proof that Jaden is a weirdo just like his mother.  Wasn’t hard to find “a few” photos …

Oh wait … that last one was when I had Bell’s Palsy.  Whoops!

Kids are a mystery and gift from God.  Who knew I would be so blessed with not one, not two but FOUR beautiful boys!

We’re Learning

The triplets and I have been learning a lot these past few days!

On Tuesday evening we tried cereal for the first time.  More came out than in that’s for sure!  Logan didn’t last too long either.  You can see in the video below when he starts to freak out.  It’s a lot to do all at once!  But the triplets and I are learning and we’ll get the new feeding thing down.  Or at least I hope we do!

Just yesterday, I found that Logan and Owen can sit up … sort of.  We need to do a few sit ups to tighten up their abs.  Not only are they learning how to sit up, from this video I learned that I should NOT be a video commentary.  Please excuse my nonsensical mommy talk.  It’s a little peak at what it’s like when it’s just me and the boys.  I never knew I talked that fast.  Is that normal?

In addition to the mom thing — I’ve volunteered to help with Teacher Appreciation week at Jaden’s school.  I haven’t helped with anything this year and I was feeling guilty.  (I mean come on — being very pregnant is NOT a reason haha)  So I thought, what the heck — it’s just collecting some gifts and assembling them into baskets.  It would be something I could do in the convenience in my own home, at whatever hour I found time.  Easy, right?  Ugh wrong!  Like every thing in my life (or so it seems) it’s gotten a little crazy!

We’ve been blessed with generous gifts from fellow parents, however in the form of cash.  That means I’ve got to go shopping.  Whoops, didn’t plan on that one!  It’s also meant drafting reminder notes to be sent home with kids.  Another whoops!  We got this great idea to send home a worksheet with the kids to have them fill out.  We would then create a book for each teacher as a thank you.  Holy cats did that one blow up in my face!!

The first wrong move was that we wanted to include the paraprofessionals.  Since mom is one at Summit View, I know how much being included in ‘teacher’ things means.  But what I wasn’t planning on was that each para helps multiple teachers.  And sometimes, they help a different teacher in the morning than in the afternoon.  How on earth were we going to do that one?

I tried to be good and get another mom help out.  I used my new Zumba class as an excuse.  “I would do it, but I’ve got Zumba tonight ….”  I tried!  Tried is the key word there.  BUT when I heard that the other mom I was working with was had to show her home for the first time the next day, my heart-strings pulled.  I found myself putting labels on worksheets with her until 10pm last night.  We got it done tho!  But I lost out on time with Doug and putting Jaden to bed, and a feeding and (very important) watching American Idol.

Along with the triplets, I’m learning too.  I’m learning my limits.  I need to do things that make me happy and keep me sane.  But with my babies, I need to be realistic on what I get involved with.  If I get in over my head, it becomes work, rather than a relief.  So while volunteering and giving is a love of mine, I need to keep it in gear and not get in over my head.  It’s just sad because I’m really good at saying yes!

4 Month Update

Today when Jaden got off the bus, we started with a sand art project.  For whatever reason Jaden wanted to keep his hat on while doing his project.  Oh he’s special 🙂

Ps – what is with the makers of sand art not giving you enough colored sand to fill all the projects?  We currently have 3 bracelets and a little jar empty because we ran out of sand.  When I was trying to explain why we didn’t have enough sand, Jaden suggested we make some more.  I asked him how we could make sand and he said you take water and you let it bake for a really long time and then you have sand.  Ummmm … A+ for creativity?

The triplets are four months old already!  They are so much more awake and animated – fun and a lot more work at times!  From what I’ve been able to read online, you start cereal at around 4 months old.  Since they were 7 weeks premature, I’m not sure if that’s 4 months chronological age or gestational.  We have an appointment on Wednesday with the doc so we shall see what he thinks!

They now study a toy when it’s hanging on the bouncy seat bar or when you hold it in front of them.  Owen will even kick his feet to hit the toy.  We are working on holding/shaking a rattle.  The boys love to hold my finger while eating.  Jaden has also taken an interest in playing with his brothers.  I think he finds it way more entertaining now that they interact with you a little.  The triplets all smile at him too.  It’s something quite magical as a mother to watch your children form bonds.

Each boy is developing more and more of their own unique personality.

Owen loves to look at you.  When feeding Logan, he started to fuss.  So I sat on the floor next to him in his boppy chair so I could comfort him.  Each time I turned to look at Logan, Owen would put on a huge pouty, frowning face.  Then I would look back at him and he would light up with smiles and giggles.  He LOVES his thumb and can find it every time.  Owen is still the most chill out of the boys.  But when he does cry …. it breaks your heart – he can really get that lip out.

Weston is wirey, wormy, wiggling and wild.  He still giggles around the most.  He constantly is wiggling himself out of his seat and half way to the ground.  He has the hardest time eating recently.  The kid can need to be burped five times in one bottle.  But he works hard at it and keeps finishing.  He has a raspberry on his left eyelid.  I wonder if that will fade or if he’ll always have that.  One thing I know for sure … he’s always moving.  Lord help me when he’s on his feet and always moving!

And last, but not least – Logan.  He still has some belly issues and tends to be the most fussy out of the three boys.  Even tho he might be the most uncomfortable, he’s smiles the most.  All you have to do it make eye contact and the kido lights up!  He goos and gahs and is the most playful.  Logan loves the swing.  After he’s fallen asleep I try to turn it off to save the batteries, but he always wakes up!  That little stink pot!  I suppose I’m getting what I dished out – my parents burned out a motor on my swing when I was a baby!

Look I got 2.5 smiles in this one!

They were so playful when taking these photos – I couldn’t pick which on to post.  So I posted them all!

This is Jaden posing for a ‘nice’ picture with his brothers.

a little better?

awww finally a nice one!  And yes that is a green sequin bow tie (watch future posts for another appearance of this bow tie!)

and the best one yet!

And then started the Jaden love fest!  He started smothering Owen with kisses!

So at four months, we are still alive!  It’s amazing how much I’ve learned about myself as a woman and a mom in the past short months.  I’ve learned how to find my self-worth when I wasn’t hearing the words.  I’ve learned that as simple as making a bottle is, it’s God’s work.  It takes more effort to whisper than it does to yell.  A four-year can both warm your heart and whiten your hair.  And three little babies can make a whole lot of laundry!

Elmo Robes Crack Me Up!

I’ve been searching for something to blog about, and have come up empty handed.  Nothing is new here – just the same routine every day!  Feeding, diapers, burping and laundry  🙂  I have some photos I’d like to share.  These adorable bath robes cracked me up after our bath last week.  Which reminds me, they are due for another one today.  Where does the time go?

3 Month Update

Can you believe these little men came into the world over three months ago?  All three boys are smiling and making “goo” noises.  Their personalities are becoming more and more identifiable too.  Owen is still so very laid back.  He can just lay there and be happy.  But when he cries – oh man does he let it go!  He’s got a deeper cry and the saddest pouty lip.

Weston is still wirey.  You can see his legs kicking all the time and his arms are always moving.  Doug said it was like watching himself talk with his hands. ha!  He was the one that wouldn’t stay tucked in during our valentine’s day photo shoot.

Logan has seemed to chill out  a little since we started the hypoallergenic formula.  He still has his fussy moments but he also has his relaxed days.  He’s the most smiley these days and really loves looking at faces.

All three boys love, love, love their nooks.  I feel like I”m on a constant nook hunt as they also shoot them out of their mouthes quite far.

Jaden is also getting to be a pro at ‘nooking his brothers.’  I don’t want Jaden to resent his brothers, but let’s face it, I need his help sometimes.  So I try to use the phrase “families help each other and right now your brother needs your help – look at how sad he is!”  Jaden is a good sport and helps a lot (usually).

The boys also love to swing.  Logan is mostly in the swing since he usually needs the rocking to calm down.  We’ve got two swings set up in the living room now.  (and with the foam flooring and bouncy seats it’s like the Bissing daycare!)

We went on our first walk yesterday.  The weather was up in the 50’s and mom and I decided it was a time for an adventure.  So off we went – me with the three babies in the baby limo and Mom with Jaden in the wagon.  It felt like we were more of a parade than just on a walk.  What a difference it made doing something and being in the fresh air rather than being cooped up in the house all day.  I have a feeling that when the weather gets nicer we are going to be spending a whole lot of time outside!

Three months down and we are still surviving!  Heck I even enjoy it at times.  But I’m not going to lie – it’s tough, really tough.  And it’s a different kind of hard than I anticipated.  But I’m learning and we are making it thru!  I’ve only just begun to learn what works and what doesn’t.

Bring on the New Year!

Happy New Year to all of our family and friends!  While I don’t think we’ll be able to top 2010 … here’s to another blessed year.

We spent New Year’s Eve at my parent’s annual party – complete with food, games and a white elephant raffle!  Doug and I made it to the finals in the pool tourney!  Not really sure how that happened … oh wait I do, the other team shot in the 8 ball – we got there with no skill of our own!  ha  Needless to say, we came in 2nd 🙂

Even the triplets were party animals!  I have to admit that I was laughing all by myself dressing up the babies.  I had a little baby party all by myself, snapping off pictures.

January 1st gets everyone thinking about what they’d like to improve for the new year.  But let’s be honest, I’m just trying to keep my head above water let alone try and improve something right now.  So rather than creating a resolution for 2011, I’m going to make a list of things I’d like to accomplish.  I’m keeping them simple to make sure they are something I could honestly obtain while raising triplets and a four year old.

  1. Make a Mommy Friend – Being a stay-at-home mom, I’m going to have to make an effort to be social now.  I get restless if I stay indoors for too long, so it shouldn’t be too hard to make play dates.  When I was working, all I had to do was walk over to someone’s cube for a little convo.  Now, a little bit more effort is needed.  My goal is to make a new mommy friend this year.  Someone who is in the same place in life as me and who can relate to being a new stay-at-home mama.  Ideally, I’d like someone who I can have play dates with – bring on the kidos!
  2. Keep Blogging – I’ve become fond of my blogging time and love that I can turn these crazy postings into a book for when the boys are grown.  Knowing that the year is only going to get crazier, I want to make sure I still take time to blog and post photos.  I’d also like to find new ways to get new readers.  I have just been posting a link to facebook and sharing by word of mouth.  Today I found a site called “Top Mommy Blogs.”  This site ranks other mom blogs like this one based on votes (reader clicks).  I’ve added a link to the right for readers to vote for me!  Come back and click on the link daily and my ranking goes up!
  3. So fresh and so clean – I’m talking good old water and soap.  Sounds small … but it’s a big deal!  With Jaden I could go a few days without showering because I’d rather be sleeping than anything else.  I’ve made it my goal to shower and get dressed everyday.  It makes me feel better.  For whatever reason, a pair of jeans makes me feel like a real person rather than being a mom in sweats all the time.
  4. Jaden’s Activity of Choice – I’d like to get Jaden into at least one class this summer and make this Mommy thing real!  I’ve never been able to do that with being a working mom.  Practice is always in the middle of the day and our weekends were precious, as it was our only time home.  I’m thinking he’d like T-Ball or maybe swimming.  It’s a goal of mine because I know it’d be SO much easier to just stay at home than pack up the kids and head off to a class or sport once a week.
  5. The Great Outdoors – I’m sort of a shut in.  I have barely met my neighbors because I’m always inside, even in the summer.  I’m going to make a point to spend more time outside.  Wether it’s dipping my feet in the kiddy pool, pushing Jaden on a swing or trying out my green thumb, I want to be outside more.  I’m thinking it’ll be good for the kids too – and my MILF tan wink wink although I’m going to pass on the two piece…

So those are a few of my 2011 to-dos.  Achievable and enjoyable.  Although I’m not sure I could accomplish more in 2011 than I did in 2010 … creating three little lives is a lot to live up to!

Gingerbread Casas – Some Assembly Required

The day for me to go somewhere on my own with the kids arrived.  Every year we have a cousin Christmas get together at my moms.  The same afternoon I had my six-week follow-up appointment.  It didn’t make sense for me to drive out there for my appointment, back into Sussex to pick up the kids and back to Waukesha again for the party.  So, I decided it made “sense” to bring the babies with me to my doc appointment.   I put on my big girl pants, packed up all four kids and headed into Waukesha for an afternoon doc appointment and an evening of cousins. I don’t know who was more nervous, me or Doug!  Before leaving, Doug gave Jaden the talk that he needed to be a big helper since I was on my own, and boy was he!

It was the little things that helped out a lot.  For example, I didn’t think thru how I was going to load the stroller because, the genius who invented the Triple Decker stroller decided that it didn’t need brakes!  Probably because no sane person would go out in public alone with three infants haha!  The no brake issue hasn’t been a problem before since it’s always been Doug and I, but when you are alone in a parking structure it can be a little interesting.  Jaden stepped in and helped out though!

Mom met us in the waiting room to help watch Jaden while I had my appointment.  There was just enough room to wheel in the stroller … no turns or maneuvering was allowed.  Nurses had to come to us to get a peek.  When I went down the line unzipping the kid’s car seat covers, I discovered a Batman comic book in Logan’s car seat!  Big brother packed it for him so he could read … ha  And Jaden continues to see what he can get away with!

After the doctor I had some hats, clothes and a Christmas card to drop off at the NICU.  All the ladies were so excited to see the boys!  We caused quite the back up in front of the NICU, but they were so happy to see them it was TOTALLY worth it!  The double pom pom hats I made for the boys.  While I had made two to donate, I think I’ll have to keep making them!  It was about a three hour adventure, but we made all of our stops and back into the car safely.  Next stop, YaYa’s house!

The past few cousin get-togethers we’ve made sugar cookies, but this year we thought it would be fun to have a gingerbread house competition.  Mom even googled to find a house that Jaden would be able to touch, decorate and eat!  It’s all Jaden could talk about for a week and a half!

We divide into three teams: girl, boys and me/Jaden.  We open up the box to Jaden’s house and wouldn’t you know … it’s not assembled!  The other two kits were ready to decorate.  How do you tell Jaden we can’t decorate it tonight?  Simple, you don’t! I make the frosting and set to work right away, keeping him occupied with occasional squirts of frosting in his mouth.  I get all four walls up – no problem!  When the first side of the roof goes up it gets a little tricky … it slides one way, and then the other.  What a disaster!  But no to fear, Jaden has happy as a clam as long as he could keep eating the candies!  I finally gave up … Jaden didn’t seem to care.  Rather than a ginger bread house to decorate, we had a gingerbread pile!  I think we won the competition hands down!

Now all hyped up on sugar, we loaded all the kids for the ride home.  Jaden crashed from his sugar high before we even made it to the freeway.  The first outing alone with the four kids was a success!  I think I could do it again … well maybe not any time too soon, but definitely again some time.

Meeting Auntie Sherri!

The last (but not least) member of our immediate family finally got to meet the boys on 12/23!!  Sherri flew in from Nashville on the 22nd and was to our house bright and early on the morning of the 23rd to meet her three newest nephews.  If you know and love Sherri, you know there were tears (of happiness of course!)
